Mr. Paul Solman, the highly decorated PBS News Hour Economics correspondent and Distinguished Professor of Practice in Yale University’s Grand Strategy program, spoke to students in Dr. David Frey’s XH 415 “Genocide” class and approximately 15 other faculty, cadets and guests from multiple departments about the economics of genocide. Using the example of the Holocaust and some of the newest scholarship on the economics of genocides and mass atrocities, Mr. Solman, who has won Emmy, Peabody, and Loeb awards for his reporting, helped explain the ways economic methodologies can explain both reasons for genocide and reasons why policymakers consistently underestimate the costs of mass atrocity. Mr. Solman also sat in on Dr. Frey’s plebe African History course, helping lead a discussion on the economics of slavery. The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Department of History sponsored his visit.
