Cadets Showcase METL Analysis ToolCadets Gustavo Maldonado ’17, Bryce Wikins ’17, and Kevin Talty ’18 briefed their capstone project to the US Army South Commander, Major General Chinn. The Cadets are investigating ways to improve the Army’s Training Information System to allow more efficient, effective, and intuitive access to training information. They have created a web-based platform that automates the METL crosswalk procedure, produces a network graph, and applies Google’s search algorithm to identify structurally important tasks. The Cadets will present their tool to the Training Management Directorate with the potential to be incorporated into the Digital Training Management System. This research project is affiliated with the USMA Network Science center. LTC Scioletti, MAJ Bacon, MAJ Fidler, and CPT Warnke serve on the advisory panel.


Rifle Defeats Morehead State

CDT Marvin Lewis '17Senior Marvin Lewis fired a career-high 593 in air rifle, just four points off the school record, and classmate Danielle Cuomo led the way in Smallbore as both earned medalist honors leading the Army West Point rifle team (2-2) to a 4640-4614 victory over Morehead State Sunday. The Black Knights swept both disciplines, along with claiming the top two individuals in each, posting a 2289 to the Eagles' 2279 in Smallbore while besting them behind a season-high 2351 mark in air rifle to Morehead State's 2335. Lewis set the pace for the No. 16 Black Knights over the weekend, recording Army's top scores in both disciplines Saturday against No. 6 Kentucky, then claimed first place in air rifle against the Eagles at the Bolton Rifle Range on Sunday. Dr. Kaufman Speaks about Transitional JusticeDr. Zachary Kaufman, currently a Senior Fellow at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Visiting Fellow at Yale Law School and Yale University's Genocide Studies Program, spoke to faculty and cadets in LTC Steven Gariepy’s International Law class about his most recent book, United States Law and Policy on Transitional Justice: Principles, Politics, and Pragmatics. Kaufman, a guest of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will soon be taking a position at the Pentagon as the Senior Advisor on Atrocity Prevention and Response. He visited the Academy to meet with Dr. David Frey, Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, who has worked closely with the previous two Senior Advisors. A Marshall Scholar and a member of the Marshall Board, Dr. Kaufman also spoke with cadets applying for the Marshall Scholarship.

Soucie Earns AHA Rookie of the Week Accolades

CDT Brendan Soucie '20After scoring two goals in Army's weekend series at Robert Morris, freshman forward Brendan Soucie has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of the Week, announced by the league Tuesday. Soucie scored two goals over the weekend for the Black Knights. The South Dennis, Mass., native notched his second career goal of the year Friday night with a bar-down shot to put the Cadets up 1-0. He then tallied the game winner on Saturday night, his second game winning goal of the season. The Black Knights improved to 3-2-1 on the year and 3-1-0 in AHA contests with their weekend split with the Colonials. Soucie ranks tied for third in rookie scoring, and is knotted at fifth with a 1.0 goals per game average. Read More

Cadets Attend Spoken Word Poetry Event in AlbanyCadets in the Creative Writing Forum attended a spoken word poetry event in Albany, NY. The event was part of a tour that renowned spoken word poets Andrea Gibson and Sarah Kay recently began. Sarah Kay, who teaches poetry internationally and has been featured in a Ted Talk entitled “If I Should Have a Daughter” began the event with three powerful poems about human experiences. She was followed by Andrea Gibson who is known for holding no punches when it comes to current social issues. Cadets had an opportunity to meet and take pictures with the two performers.

Poe Named Army's Athlete of the Week

Senior wide receiver Edgar Poe was selected as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after his performance in the win over Wake Forest. Poe finished with a career high 122 receiving yards on four catches and scored Army's first touchdown of the afternoon in the 21-13 come-from-behind win against the Demon Deacons. It was the third 100-yard receiving game for Poe, who had reached the mark twice last season. Click here to watch the video: https://youtu.be/tyq9RX558UY. He hauled in a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw to put the Black Knights up midway through the first quarter. Poe also caught a 35 yard pass from Bradshaw in the second quarter and then had a huge catch in the fourth frame that put Army in business at the Wake Forest 26-yard line. WPOCT at the OCR World Championships

WPOCT at the OCR World ChampionshipsThe West Point Obstacle Course Team (WPOCT) participated in OCR World Championships at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada. The team fitted four teams: two pro and two amateur. The race was composed of four legs each focusing on a different specialization in Obstacle Course Racing. Therefore, within the three-man teams, one racer specialized in technique, one in speed, and one in strength. The legs were comprised of 10 obstacles, a 5km sprint through hills with four running obstacles, and an 800m ski slope run while carrying 60lb sandbags, respectively. The fourth leg tested teamwork and innovation where the entire team conquered obstacles together. The competitors ranged from a numerous assortment of countries to include a team from Sandhurst Military Academy. This was a remarkable opportunity for the team to display their expertise on the international field while representing the United States, the United States Military Academy, and the US Army.

Epps Nets 10th of the Season in 1-0 Win

CDT Rex Epps '20Freshman Rex Epps scored his Patriot League-leading 10th goal of the year to send the Army West Point men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory in a nonconference match against Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday night at University Stadium. Army improves to 9-6-2 overall following the victory, while Fairleigh Dickinson falls to 3-10-3. Epps netted the only goal of the game in the 75th minute on an assist from senior Trase Stapley. Stapley beat a pair of Fairleigh Dickinson defenders before sending a low cross to the middle of the 18-yard box, where Epps scored on a high, hard shot that cleared the reach of goalkeeper Sebastian Ferreira. Freshman Justin Stoll made two saves in the first half for the Black Knights and junior Christian Nolasco didn't face a shot during the second half, as the two combined for Army's fifth clean sheet of the season. Skeet & Trap Compete with the Peconic River SportsmenThe Army Skeet and Trap team traveled to Manorville NY to compete in an interclub match up with the Peconic River Sportsmen. The Sporting clays event consisted of 15 stations totaling 100 targets presented around the venues scenic property. The Cadets, faced with the challenge of gusty winds over 30 MPH were able to break as many targets as the conditions permitted and put up a team score of 709 prevailing over Peconic's 658. High gun for Army was CDT James Manni with a 79. Afterwards Peconic hosted the cadets to a team dinner to reminisce of the day's shoot and to recognize the top guns for both teams. Peconic is looking forward to February when the Sportsmen visit West Point and attempt to even the season score. As tradition would have it, the Peconic River Sportsmen were tremendous hosts yet again going above and beyond to ensure the cadets enjoyed their visit to Long island.

Federal Judge Visits Advanced Constitutional Law ClassUS Chief District Court Judge Colleen McMahon visited with cadets in the Advanced Constitutional Law seminar taught by Department of Law Professor and Constitutional Law Chair, Tony DiSarro. Judge McMahon was appointed to the federal district court by President Clinton in 1998 and currently serves as the Chief Judge for the Southern District in Manhattan. Chief Judge McMahon had a lively discussion with the cadets about searches and seizures and the 4th Amendment. She also recounted conversations she had with late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia with regard to interpreting this constitutional right.

Shea Adds Academic All-League Nod

CDT Clare Shea '18Clare Shea of Army West Point women's soccer earned her second conference honor of the week as she was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team on Wednesday. Earlier this week she was also named to the All-Patriot League First Team. Shea, an Operations Research major, holds a 3.829 cumulative GPA and was named to the academic team for the first time in her career. The Allendale, N.J., native was one of just two players to have started all 18 games this season for the Black Knights. She led Army in assists, points, shots, shots on goal, and was tied for tops on the team in goals and game-winners. On the year, Shea recorded 39 shots, with 25 of them being on frame. Read More

Young Men & Women's Hebrew Assoc. Hosts CadetsThe staff of the Shorefront (Brooklyn) Young Men and Women’s Hebrew Association (YM/W HA) hosted 63 Russian-Language Cadets, providing them the opportunity to speak in small groups with Russian-speaking residents of the area, including a number of WWII veterans. The Cadets then had the chance to sample Russian cuisine for lunch and engage in additional activities while immersed in a Russian-speaking environment. Cadets developed a greater understanding of the Russian émigré community in the United States and made a positive impression on the local community.

CDT Andrew Solomonides '19 and CDT Shelby Lindsay '18The Center for Enhanced Performance at West Point has started a Corps Squad Scholar of the Month award and November's honorees are Andrew Solomonides and Shelby Lindsay. Each month, the Center for Enhanced Performance will highlight the top male and female corps squad athletes at West Point. The Corps Squad (Athletics) Scholar of the Month award recognizes those who demonstrate excellence in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Lindsay is a two-time captain with a 3.7 APSC, 3.4 MPSC, 3.6 PPSC and 3.7 QPA in her major, Operations Research with Honors. According to one of the officer representatives, she "just crushes is it both academically and on the field." She attacks each practice with enthusiasm and strong desire to improve and win. On the team, Solomonides is consistently competing for one of the top spots. Earlier this year, he qualified for the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, one of the highest-level matches for competitors under 21 in the United States. Read More

Guest Speaker from the Center for Oral HistoryLTC Rick Black from the Department of History’s Center for Oral History served as a guest speaker for PL361: Qualitative Research Methods, a Sociology elective taught by Dr. Morten Ender in BS&L. The cadets in the class had just finished several lessons on interviewing skills, and LTC Black focused on oral histories, using several interviews from the Center for Oral History’s “African-American Military Experience” archive to reinforce to the cadets the skills he spoke about during the class. He also discussed methods used to prepare for the interviews, different interviewing techniques, and the technical considerations for collecting oral histories.

Gahagen Garners Goalie of the Month Honors

CDT Parker Gahagen '17Firstie goaltender Parker Gahagen was named the Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Month after helping the Army West Point hockey team get off to its best start since the 2006-07 season, going 3-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league play in October. Gahagen leads Atlantic Hockey in both goals against average and save percentage with 1.33 and 0.955 marks, respectively. Those numbers also rank him fourth in the nation behind a trio of Ivy League/ECAC goalies. He has backstopped the top penalty-killing unit in Atlantic Hockey, allowing just three power-play goals in 43 attempts, a 93.0 percent kill rate. Gahagen also posted back-to-back shutouts to open league play, helping him carry a scoreless streak of over 142 minutes during the month. Read More

The Regional Meeting of the American Assoc. of Physics TeachersDr. Paula Fekete and Cadets Nguyen and Hellmers attended the regional meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers at Wesleyan University. The two cadets are currently working on a PH489 project in the New Cadet Observatory with Dr. Fekete. Their attendance and presentation at the meeting marked their “first ever” at a scientific conference. The talk was entitled the “History of the West Point Observatories and a History of Astronomy Instruction at the US Military Academy.” They also attended the opening session of the conference in which several demonstrations, originally presented at the first AAPT National Meeting, held at Wesleyan 66 years ago in 1950 were “resurrected” among other interesting, but more recent, demos. Cadets were most impressed by the presentation of Dr. Linda Dake of Utica College. Her talk, entitled “A Multi-Level Seminar for Physics Majors: A Good Deal for Everyone” presented Utica College’s approach to developing and maintaining an engaging and welcoming environment in their small physics department to all physics majors. Cadet Nguyen left the meeting with the idea of trying to implement this model at their own local SPS Club’s meetings, attempting to bring physics faculty and cadets together to discuss physics in the popular science literature.

Cycling at the Collegiate Mountain NationalsMud, rain, snow and tears... Chilling pain and gusty winds dampened the spirits of the competitors. Making it a test of intestinal fortitude. This is the second year in a row that the Cycling Team has attended Collegiate Mountain Nationals. Riders battled fierce competition, heavy rain, wind, and even snow for the duration of the competition. CDT Preston Pritchard ’18, CDT Wyatt Gengler ’19, and CDT Daniel Forquer ’17 traveled to the hills of Snowshoe, West Virginia to compete in the USAC Collegiate Mountain National Competition in Cross Country and Short Track Cross Country.

Habitat for Humanity Trip to Yonkers

Habitat for Humanity Trip to Yonkers11 cadets from Company I3, along with MAJ Brewer, traveled to Chappaqua, NY to help transition an old church and Quaker meeting location into affordable living quarters, in a very affluent community, for two families. Some of these cadets were a part of the initial teardown phase of this project in the spring last semester. During this trip, the cadets were handling jackhammers, shovels, tampers, and picks in order to break concrete around the house and refill trenches with the surrounding dirt mound which saved H4H over $3,000 they would have paid a local contractor to do. Overall, CDTs Nolan, Gould, Daigle, Shyamkumar, Vogel, Brehm, Rapp, Batista, Gilbert, Jaquish, and Abercrombie enjoyed the work at this site and felt a sense of accomplishment after their service to the community.

Kim Earns D1A Rugby Player of the Month Accolades

CDT Jon Kim '18Junior fly half Jon Kim of the Army West Point men's rugby team was named the D1A Rugby Player of the Month for October. Kim started in all four matches during October for the Black Knights and led the offensive attack with 61 points. The Gardena, CA, native scored one try, 13 conversions and 10 penalty kicks in that span, including a varsity single-game record five PKs against Wheeling Jesuit on the 15th. He added a try and four conversions against the Cardinals for the second-most points in a single game by a Cadet since the fall 2014 season. "Jon has been on a rapidly improving path this entire fall, and in October it's only accelerated," said head Coach Matt Sherman. "He gets a lot of accolades for his kicking, as he should, but he's also been instrumental in running our attack with ball in hand. Read More

Chief Pfeifer Speaks with CadetsChief Joseph Pfeifer, chief of Counterterrorism and Emergency Preparedness in the New York Fire Department and a CTC senior fellow, spoke to cadets taking SS464: Homeland Security and Defense during Dean's Hour. Chief Pfeifer discussed the importance of leadership and the decision-making process during times of crisis. Chief Pfeifer was the first chief at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and he provided the cadets with an in-depth look at his thought process during that difficult time. Chief Pfeifer also discussed the important lessons that were learned from that crisis, which were put into action during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and he outlined his perspectives on potential attacks against the homeland that will require the cadets’ leadership.
