Bryn Named First Team Academic All-District

CDT Megan Bryn '18Junior libero Megan Bryn of the Army West Point volleyball team has been named First Team Academic All-District by College Sports Information Directors of America. The 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District® volleyball teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. All First Team Academic All-District honorees will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballots, where first-, second- and third-team All-America selections take place. The Academic All-America teams will be selected by vote of the Academic All-Americat® committee and CoSIDA Board of Directors, with the women's volleyball selections announced December 5-8. Feature Friday: The Marshall Plaque

There are college football traditions all over this country, but few have more significance than touching the Marshall Plaque before running onto Blaik Field at Michie Stadium. At every game, home or away, Army West Point Football players will take the field after placing their hands as they pass by the bronze Marshall Plaque which is held by an Army officer with affiliations to the team. The wording on a bronze plaque, placed near the southeast corner of Michie Stadium, has been recognized over the years as a splendid compliment, not only to West Point, but also to the long line of West Point football players who are a unique breed, indeed. Gen. George C. Marshall, then-Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army, needed an officer to train and lead a ranger-type battalion on a secret mission. He requested the Secretary of the General Staff to obtain this officer. Little did the famous Virginia Military Institute graduate realize, but he was furnishing the words that later were to become of utmost importance to the U.S. Military Academy. Club Hockey Back in the Win ColumnClub Hockey got back in the win column, notching a 4-0 shutout over Fairfield University, running its record to 9-3-0., and earning the program's first-ever ranking at #8 in the ACHA Division II Southeast Refion. On November 12 at 2 pm Eastern, Army and Navy (ACHA DI) hit the ice at Santander Arena in Reading, PA, for the 3rd Annual Royal Cup. ESPN3 features the matchup as its ACHA Game of the Week. Cadets, Faculty and Family Help Habitat for HumanityPhysics and Nuclear Engineering (PaNE) recently took a trip to Newburgh, NY to support a Habitat for Humanity Team Build in a neighborhood where housing upgrades are desperately needed. PaNE Cadets, faculty and family members joined forces to help provide housing for needy families in the neighboring community. 3 Cadets, 4 faculty and 3 family members participated.

Wrestling Posts Strong Showing at Southeast OpenThe Army West Point wrestling team opened the season with a solid performance at the Southeast Open, hosted by Virginia Tech, on Sunday. 39 Black Knights competed in the season-opening tournament, including 16 making their collegiate debuts. Army posted an overall record of 96-68 with 31 bonus-point wins (16 falls, 11 tech. falls and four major decisions). The Black Knights went 5-11 against ranked opponents. Army had the most freshman/sophomore podium finishes with nine and were second in the open bracket with six. Senior team co-captain Logan Everett pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the opening weekend, taking down fifth-ranked Joey Ward from North Carolina, 7-4, in the 141-pound semifinals. Senior co-captain Russ Parsons claimed the 157-pound open title by going 5-0 with a technical fall and a major decision. Freshman Ben Harvey claimed the 174-pound freshman/sophomore title by going 5-0 with one major decision. Freshman Noah Hanau pinned Austin Emerson in 50 seconds, the fastest pin for a Cadet since Brian Harvey did so against Eric Fimbers of the Gateway Bible Institute in 0:19 last season on Dec. 4 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Combat Weapons Team Law Enforcement Pistol ClinicThe Army West Point Combat Weapons Team hosted a basic pistol clinic at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center and an intermediate pistol and carbine clinic. More than 35 law enforcement professionals representing local, state and federal agencies, to include NYPD, participated in the two clinics. Instruction was solely led by cadet members of the team. The clinic curriculum demonstrated the team’s collective knowledge and skill of tactical shooting. The plans of instruction included pistol draw. Rifle transition drills, accuracy drills, use of cover, forward, backward and lateral movement drills. Training concluded with several “stress tests” which were designed to incorporate all skills reviewed throughout the day. The team proudly celebrated its 11th year of hosting this clinic.

Volleyball Wins Thriller over Navy

The Army West Point volleyball team topped service academy rival Navy Saturday night in a five set thriller. The Black Knights and Midshipmen traded sets throughout the night, but a 5-0 run by the Cadets sealed the victory in the tiebreaker. Army improved to 18-10 overall and 10-4 in the Patriot League with tonight's win. The Black Knights were led by a 55-assist performance by freshman Haven Bethune. Click here to watch the video recap: https://youtu.be/PjzOnhWpi38. She also notched 13 digs to record a double-double. Allie Strong also recorded a double-double off 13 kills and 22 digs. Carolyn Bockrath led the team with 16 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. Amber Clay tallied nine digs in the match and six kills, while Vanessa Wesley had 11 kills and three blocks. Olivia Fairfield recorded 11 points and Shannel Chong had 15 digs. Read More

Dang Breaks Plebe Breaststroke RecordAlthough men's swimming and diving fell to Columbia and Penn Ty Dang highlighted the evening as he broke the Plebe (first-year) record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes and 00.91 seconds. The record had not been broken since 2013 by Colin Kanzari. Dang also took home a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke after clocking a time of 54.48 seconds. "Today was a great learning experience, and we're disappointed in outcome, but we know we're better than what we showed today," head coach Mickey Wender said. "We will learn and improve for the next meet. We're disappointed, but we understand what we need to do to get to the next level." "Ty has been tremendous for us all year," said Wender. "Tonight was only the tip of the iceberg for him. He's a talented swimmer, and we're really proud of him. He's only going to get better from here." Josh Sembrano tied for first with Michal Zyla of Columbia in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 49.82 seconds, and also took fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.77. Read More

Catholic Chapel Choir Sing Musical LiturgyThe Catholic Choir traveled to Kenilworth, NJ. The trip was a great developmental experience for cadets and a success for West Point outreach. The 14 Cadets were housed with families of the host parish, St. Theresa's of Kenilworth, New Jersey. The Catholic Choir sang the musical liturgy during one Mass on Saturday and two on Sunday for the total congregation of approximately 1,400. To express appreciation, the hosts provided transportation and tickets for the cadets to see Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway. Now in its 24th year, the relationship between the Catholic Choir and Kenilworth has fostered enormous good will, a steady stream of potential admissions candidates, and at least one USMA graduate.

Rifle Places 2nd at Air Force

Rifle Places 2nd at Air ForceThe Army West Point rifle team came in second at the President's trophy match behind No. 5 Air Force, while taking down No. 15 Navy and Coast Guard. There were two different types of scoring in the quad match. For President's Trophy each team had eight cadets compete, taking the top four scores. For NCAA scoring each team picks five cadets, but takes only the top four scores. Air Force led the pack scoring a 4698 as it outscored the other service academies in both air rifle (2376) and smallbore (2322). The Black Knights came in second with an aggregate score of 4646 shooting 2344 in air rifle and 2302 in smallbore. Navy captured third scoring 4607 with 2272 in smallbore and 2335 in air rifle. Rounding out the scoring was Coast Guard accumulating and aggregate score of 4474 with a 2272 in air rifle and a 2202 in smallbore. Read More

Model UN Forum at the Nat'l Collegiate Security ConferenceThe West Point Model United Nations Debate team traveled to Bethesda, MD to compete at the National Collegiate Security Conference, hosted by Georgetown University. NCSC is one of the largest and most competitive Mode UN Conferences of the year, featuring over 550 delegates from over 40 different schools, including top-five teams such as the University of Chicago, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, and Florida International University. Testing a new training approach, and fielding an exceptionally young and relatively inexperienced team, the USMA delegation passionately debated issues from the Cold War to civil conflict in Sierra Leone. At the end of the weekend, the West Point team emerged as the Best Small Delegation for NCSC XLVI - the first place award for the conference - beating out Florida International University, New York University, and dozens of other schools and cementing a place among the top teams in the nation. Individual Awards CDT Lowe: Verbal Commendation, CDT Siebman: Verbal Commendation, CDT Stoffel: Verbal Commendation, CDT Krishnan: Best Delegate, CDT McCurry: Outstanding Delegate, CDT Berry: Outstanding Delegate, CDT Mcvicar: Outstanding Delegate.

Bethune Tabbed Army's Athlete of the Week

After posting 80 assists over two games, freshman setter Haven Bethune was named the Army West Point Athletics Athlete of the Week and the Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Bethune centered Army's offense during a two-win weekend with victories over Lafayette (3-0) and a five set thriller over service academy rival Navy. Click here to watch the video: https://youtu.be/-GhQkP8Ua5o. The rookie had a career-high 55 assists against the Mids on Saturday to average 11.0 per set. The Chattanooga, TN, native also tallied 19 digs on the weekend and 13 against Navy to post the fifth double-double performance of her career. Cadets Visit the Metropolitan Museum of ArtFour Cadets and 1 DFL faculty member viewed the Islamic Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in NYC. The MET houses the most extensive collection of Islamic art objects in the world. Cadets practiced their Arabic and Persian reading skills to interpret manuscripts from around the Islamic world. Afterward Cadets dined at a Ayan, Lebanese restaurant. Cadets used their Arabic to order food and maintained conversation with the waiters in Arabic.

CDT Amira Mohamed spars against a CSBG fighterThe Women’s Boxing team traveled to New York City to engage in exhibition training at their Coach’s gym, Church Street Boxing gym. This is a trip section we participate in multiple times each semester, and is extremely beneficial for the development of our fighters. This iteration of the trip section was focused on preparing the fighters that are engaging in Army vs. Air Force later the same week. Those girls sparred NYC fighters, and trained all morning to solidify their muscle memory and ring awareness. Overall the trips section went smoothly, and the training was well worth it.

Triathlon at the Ironman 70.3 CNC in Austin

Triathlon at the Ironman 70.3 CNC in AustinThe Army West Point Triathlon Team successfully defended its position as the Ironman 70.3 Collegiate National Champions in Austin, TX. This was the eighth consecutive championship. Eighteen members of the team completed the event which included a 56-mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. CDTs De Vries ’19 and Conger ’19 were the 1st and 2nd Place collegiate women and CDTs O'Donnell ’17 and Varrato ’17 were the 2nd and 3rd place collegiate men. De Vries and Conger also earned qualification spots to the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Chattanooga, TN in September 2017.

Equestrian Hosts a Zone 3 Region 3 IHSAArmy West Point Equestrian hosted a Zone 3 Region 3 IHSA English Hunter Seat competition at Centenary College. Cadets competed against athletes from Centenary University, Drew University, Marist College, Sarah Lawrence College, SUNY New Paltz, Stevens Institute of Technology, Vassar College, and William Paterson. The team finished fourth overall, only one point behind the third-place team. Early in the show, Charlotte Hereford ’20 won first place in Novice Equitation over Fences and Merle Kreye ’17, (German exchange cadet) placed third in Intermediate Equitation over Fences. Hereford would later place third in Novice Equitation on the Flat and Kreye would go on to place second in Intermediate Equitation on the Flat. Matilda Brady ’19 also placed third in Novice Equitation on the Flat. Robert Seals ’20 took first place in Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter Equitation, his second consecutive win of the season. In Walk/Trot Equitation, Mike Murray ’17 won first place and Kyle Many ’17 placed second. Also worth recognizing are those cadets who competed at new levels this week. Matilda Brady completed in Novice Equitation over Fences, her first class over fences; Charlotte Hereford also competed in Novice Equitation over Fences and on the Flat for the first time. Katie Silecchia ’19 competed in Novice Equitation on the Flat for the first time, and Madeline Suba competed in her first Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter Equitation class. In addition to the equestrian events, the team competed in an intercollegiate costume contest in observance of Halloween.

King Honored with Defender of Nation Award

CDT Andrew King '17The Charlotte Touchdown Club announced today that Andrew King is the recipient of its inaugural Defender of the Nation Award sponsored by The Independence Fund. The Defender of the Nation Award celebrates our nation's military academies and their many outstanding-student athletes according to John Rocco Executive Director Charlotte Touchdown Club. Rocco commented, "Congratulations to Andrew King as the first recipient of the Defender of the Nation award, which is sponsored by The Independence Fund. We look forward to honoring King at this year's Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on December 5." Recipient of The Defender of the Nation Award was selected from the nation's military academies and institutions including West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, The Citadel, Coast Guard Academy, Norwich University, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Virginia Military Institute and is based on exceptional leadership qualities on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Scuba Club NAUI CertificationRecently the Scuba Club certified 21 cadets as NAUI basic Scuba divers. Twice a week for the past month students have attended classes and pool sessions administered by 15 Scuba Club members. Dives at Dutch Springs were led by the team’s instructors, dive-masters and dive controllers.

Functional Fitness Club at CrossFit New Windsor

Functional Fitness Club at CrossFit New WindsorThe purpose of the trip was to build relations with CrossFit New Windsor. While doing so, the team supported an organization that fundraises money in order to help women pay for breast examinations and increase their chances of identifying cancer early on. Their positive ties with neighboring CrossFit gyms allows them to branch out, represent West Point and get some workouts in.
