Crew Competes in the Head of the Occoquan Regatta

On 30 Oct., the Army West Point Novice Crew team competed in the Head of the Occoquan Regatta in Lorton, VA, in a race that attracts more than 7000+ competitors from 250 collegiate and club programs from across the country. The Novice Team, comprised of 34 Plebes, fielded fours and eights in the three-mile head race. In the first race of the day for the team, the Men’s Novice Fours Event, Army brought home the first medals of the season with a third place finish. The second Novice entry finished close behind in 5th place, just out of medal contention. The bronze medal boat was stroked by CDT Jared Ells, followed by CDTs Ryan Applin, Bradley Rossignol, and Matthew Eden, with CDT Sam Norman in the coxswains seat. The Novice Women entered two fours as well, finishing 7th and 9th. In the premier event for the Novice athletes, Army added to the medal count with a Bronze Medal for the men and a Silver for the women. The men’s boat, with CDT David Rapp at stroke, followed by CDTs Benjamin Count, Brian Curtin, William Born, Eric Kelly, Richard Lancaster, Nick Roth, Grant Hall and Sam Norman as the coxswain, completed the race in just over 17 minutes, ahead of 16 other boats including the top boats from many Corps-Squad level competitors including Marietta, Loyola, and Washington College. The women completed the competition with the best finish of the day for Army in second place, ahead of 18 other boats including the top boats from NCAA programs from West Virginia, Duquesne, Delaware, Buffalo, and Loyal. The Women’s Novice Eight was powered by stroke CDT Hannah Makuch, followed by CDTs Mary Bahr, Lauren Pile, Maggie Gleason, Lauren Hudak, Natalie Nepa, Amanda Kuruc, Catherine Hall, and lead by coxswain CDT Xiao Pfoham.
