The list of U.S. Military Academy cadets who’ve served as both class president and first captain includes a Heisman Trophy-winning Rhodes Scholar, the only officer other than George Washington to be recognized as “general of the armies of the United States” … and the former junior-class president of Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
Give Eugene Coleman some time to add to his résumé: The most recent member of that club, joining retired Brig. Gen. Pete Dawkins (Class of 1959) and Gen. John Pershing (Class of 1886), is only a few days into his senior year at West Point. He officially began his first captain duties Aug. 10, according to a West Point news release; classes started Monday.
“There is no doubt in my mind that he is the right person to serve as first captain,” Brig. Gen. John “J.T.” Thomson, West Point’s commandant, said of Coleman in an email. “We are truly blessed to have E.J. at West Point.
