CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Army West Point senior Alex Van Velzer was honored as Patriot League Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second season in a row, the conference announced Monday. Van Velzer was also joined by junior Harrison McCormick in landing on the league's All-Academic Team. The All-Academic Team selection is the second for each player as both were recognized for the honor last season.
Van Velzer is an International Relations major who holds a 3.584 grade point average as a second-semester senior. His Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor marks the eighth time an Army West Point men's tennis player has received the award and he becomes just the third Black Knight to earn accolade twice, joining Carl Fisher (2005, 2006) and Travis Burns (1999, 2000). McCormick has a 3.612 grade point average as a Systems Engineering major. The junior won all five of his singles matches on the year, including a 4-0 mark against Patriot League opponents. He posted a 3-0 record at No. 6 singles, while going 1-0 from the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. Read More
