Cadets Volunteer to Clean up Newburgh Cemetery

NEWBURGH – Cadets from the United States Military Academy volunteered their time to help clean up debris and vandalized headstones at St. George’s Cemetery on Washington Street in the City of Newburgh on Saturday.

Eighteen cadets from Company Bravo 2 and Charlie 2, with the help of Bill Rose the cemetery’s grounds keeper, uprighted a number of knocked over headstones, cleaned up garbage, debris and helped erect a new fence to keep out trespassers.

Rose, who oversaw the work, said the cemetery is a major traffic point for kids and gangs in the neighborhood, who cut across from one side of the neighborhood to the other. Usually, they will end up spray painting their gang tags on the monuments, knocking over gravestones for sport and dropping garbage as well as drug paraphernalia on their way through. Read More
