WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s basketball junior guard Kelsey Minato was honored as the Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) on Tuesday, marking the second time she has received the accolade this season. Minato was also named Patriot League Player of the Week and College Sports Madness Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday.
Players eligible for the weekly award must play for one of the 73 New York-area schools across Divisions I, II and III that hold membership in the MBWA. A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., Minato posted averages of 27.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games last week, helping the Black Knights to victories over Colgate and American.
The junior registered 28 points at Colgate on Jan. 21, including the game-winning basket with four seconds remaining to give Army a 64-62 win over the Raiders. The victory marked Army’s first road win in the Patriot League this season. Minato shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the floor, 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from deep and hit 90.0 percent (9-of-10) at the free throw line, while also adding five rebounds and four assists in the win.
