CDT Sam Brown, a Department of Geography & Environmental Engineering (GEnE) Human-Environment major, completed a three-week Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) with the 61st Civil Affairs Detachment at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. During his time with the 61st, CDT Brown worked with the Middle East CIM team, covering Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAS, Jordan and Egypt. He leveraged his academic knowledge of human geography and environmental interaction to analyze current events and their projected impact on US Army interests. Additionally, he developed products examining the Jordanian Syrian refugee crisis and the current Jordanian PMESII status which he briefed to MG McCormick, the Task Force Commanding General. Lastly, Sam toured the city of Fahaheel, which gave him an in-person perspective on the social divide between Kuwaitis and foreign-born workers. This AIAD gave CDT Brown the ability to apply his knowledge outside of West Point, as well as develop a more nuanced appreciation for how events in Jordan play into US foreign interest calculations.
