Sailing Team at the Stamford Vineyards RaceThe Off-Shore team of the USMA Sailing Team competed in the Stamford Vineyards Race. The team raced over 238 miles, from Stamford, CT to the Buzzard's Bay Light and back on the Long Island Sound. After over 50 hours of racing, the team was forced to retire due to weather conditions, as did over 70% of the other 60 teams. Still, the team did exceptionally well, beating upwind for 28 hours, braving the narrow Plum Gut both exiting and entering the Sound, and rounding the Light in expert fashion. Soon the team will compete against Navy for the first time this season at Annapolis and the experience gained in this race will be invaluable to their success this year. Seven members from the Off-Shore Team of the USMA Sailing Team participated in the 2018 Spirit Rider Regatta on Long Island. The regatta is an annual event held in honor of the First Responders and Service Members who have lost their lives on 9/11 and in the War on Terror, including one firefighter related to the regatta organizer. After attending the commencement dinner at the Ocean Club, the cadets competed in a two-hour race on Saturday against Navy and other collegiate off-shore teams. On Sunday, the cadets, along with midshipmen from USNA, acted as the honor guard for a memorial service honoring First Responders and Service Members.
