Fourteen civil engineering cadets traveled to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York to compete in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Upstate New York Student Conference. The annual event serves as the regional qualifier for the ASCE national competition for the concrete canoe team and the steel bridge team. The cadet teams designed, built, and competed against students from the other universities across Upstate New York and Canada. The competition was fierce and both West Point teams were pleased to place in the top ten. The concrete canoe team won the “Spirit of the Competition” award for their perseverance in continuing to compete after their canoe capsized and suffered significant damage in one of the early races. Two cadets also competed in the Mead Ethics Essay contest which included a written submission and an oral presentation. Cadet Grayson Sprouse placed third with his investigation into the ethical implications of social media use by professionals.
