The USMA Corrosion Challenge Capstone team competed and placed 3rd in the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) University Student Design and Applied Solutions Competition (USDASC) in Phoenix, AZ. The competition included USNA, USAFA and five other universities. The cadets were tasked with designing a system that inspects, identifies, quantifies, and reports the presence of water, surface corrosion, and type of coating degradation in a complex environment with precision and accuracy. After writing a report and delivering a presentation about their system design, the cadets used their system inside of a painted steel structure to detect and map the corrosion present in the structure.
