LTC Josh Carlisle presented a talk titled, “Hoodies and Handguns: How Reasonable is ‘Reasonable Force?'” to the Philosophy Forum. LTC Carlisle examined the meaning and significance of the notion of reasonable force as it is used in judicial rulings on police violence and in law enforcement training. LTC Carlisle discussed a number of concerns with this notion and the role it plays in assessments of appropriate conduct by police officers. LTC Carlisle also argued that using criminal courts to effect changes in police behavior may not be as effective as civil trials and direct public pressure on District Attorneys. The talk was followed by a lively discussion with cadets and faculty. The Philosophy Forum seeks to foster philosophical reflection on important issues among the Corps of Cadets.
