Cadets studying in Kiev had an opportunity to travel to Odessa and Chisinau recently. Both cities have large Russian speaking populations. Odessa is a port city which is a popular summer destination for Russian speaking tourists with a rich history from both imperial and communist periods. The cadets also learned about local prominent figures while on a walking tour. Standing in Sobor Square, the cadets learned about Russian Prince and Field Marshall Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov. Vorontsov was a successful military leader during the Napoleanic and Crimean Wars. He also served as governor of “New Russia” an old name for the region which now has ominous implications.
