At the end of this past summer B Company (The Buffs), Fourth Regiment along with Gold Star Family members, Tim and Janice Surdyke honored the actions and memory of cadet Tom Surdyke. Company B4s Second Class and key leaders carried a 125-pound granite stone to the top of Popolopen Torne along the “trail of the fallen.” The Buffs used this crucible event to memorialize cadet Surdyke for future generations of the Long Gray Line, to tell the story of how he gave his life to save another’s, and to build esprit de corps among the company leadership. Cadet Surdyke’s parents, Tim and Janice Surdyke joined the Buff family on the trail and listened to the stories from classmates, teammates, and roommates about the impact cadet Surdyke made on each of them.
