The Army West Point Climbing Club took eight cadets to the Shawagunks Mountain Range in New Paltz, NY, to participate in a day of outdoor climbing. Cadets on the trip included six club members, one cadet from the rock climbing lifetime sport class, Hayden Ward ’18, and one member from the competitive climbing club, Lily McDonough ’19. The members of the club who participated in this trip section include Jacqueline Head ’17, Jack Roche ’19, Angela Martone ’19, Jared Ells ’19, Connor Dunn ’20, and DeMar Gale ’20. In the morning, the group set up various routes in the Trapps region building on the technical foundations learned in the indoor climbing gym. Utilizing traditional climbing systems, placing gear and building anchors, Roche followed CPT Leydet as he led to set up routes for the rest of the club. Participants of the trip section gained experience with outdoor rock climbing practicing on routes at levels 5.6 – 5.10. Hayden Ward improved his climbing skills and got exposure to outdoor climbing systems.
