Faculty from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering and Systems Engineering took eight Cadets from seven different departments to the 76th Annual Scholarship Fund Dinner Dance sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) – New York City Post. The event was held in the grand ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC. The USMA SAME student chapter is a multidisciplinary academic club which exposes Cadets to public/private engineering partnerships which are instrumental to the infrastructure of our nation in times of peace and war. SAME is dedicated to STEM initiatives and awarded over 180 academic scholarships (over 30 presented at the banquet) to students from over 75 universities from across the country. Five of the eight Cadets were each awarded a $500 scholarship for their exemplary character, academic, military and physical performance as the top Cadet (ranked by CQPA) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Management, Computer Science, and Civil Engineering. The other three Cadets included the SAME Club Cadet-in-Charge and two new club members. Guest speakers for the evening included LTG Semonite, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chief of Engineers; MG Green, Air Force Director of Civil Engineers; Rear Admiral Randall Gardner, Chief Engineer Officer of the United States Public Health Services, and other military and civilian leaders from academia, industry, and government agencies. Participation in this event enabled enrichment of West Point’s interaction with New York City as well demonstrates the variety of academic programs available at USMA.
