Cadets, staff, and faculty welcomed four guest speakers to Bartlett Hall for the Keller Army Community Hospital / USMA Research Symposium: Insights into Recent Advances in the Study, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Osteoarthritis. The event highlighted results from research at West Point and elsewhere to address the onset of osteoarthritis resulting from sports injuries. The attendees were treated to a talk by Robin Pool, PhD, Professor Emeritus from McGill University’s Department of Surgery and Microbiology/Immunology, entitled “New Insights into Knee Osteoarthritis Onset and Pathology with Collagenase-generated Biomarkers.” Dr. Pool was followed by Carla R. Scanzello, MD, PhD, Section Chief, Rheumatology, CPL Michal J. Cresenz Veterans Administration Medical Center, Assistant Professor, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology and Department of Orthopedics, who presented “Inflammation in Early Osteoarthritis: Insights from Patients and Animal Models.” Next, Miguel Otero, PhD, Laboratory for Cartilage Biology, Research Division, The Hospital for Special Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College, addressed “Precision Medicine for Orthopedics: Understanding Molecular Arthritis.” Finally, COL Svoboda, MD, Director, John A. Feagin Jr. Sports Medicine Fellowship, Keller Army Community Hospital, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, spoke on “The ACL Injury, West Point, and Biomarkers: A Gateway to Understanding Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis.”
