Cadets studying abroad in Latvia attended a panel discussion entitled “Sustainable Political Development in the Region.” The Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Latvia hosted the event at Daugavpils University. Ambassadors representing Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark attended. Panel participants discussed topics that included development, unemployment, education, health care reform, and international relations. The panelists presented what they considered a template for success in both foreign and domestic affairs. The core of their recommendations centered around understanding the uniqueness of the various cultures and regions; giving the populace a more active voice in local government; and making needed reforms to address some of the outstanding grievances. An informal reception followed the discussion, allowing participants to continue to exchange views and interact directly with high-ranking diplomats. The same group of cadets had an opportunity to travel to Berlin to experience the Soviet influence on East Berlin. The Cadets visited the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Karlhorst Museum, constructed by the Soviet authorities as a museum to mark the Nazi surrender.
