Orienteering Meet at Hickory Run State ParkThe Army West Point Orienteering Team traveled to Hickory Run State Park in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania for its first meet of the fall season, from 9-11 September. This event consisted of blocks of training on Saturday morning and afternoon, followed by night orienteering (Night-O) on Saturday evening. They team geared up with headlamps and put their skills to the test under limited visibility. Sunday followed up with a classic course, which was longer and more technical than Saturday’s race. The team worked hard to improve their basic orienteering skills on Saturday (such as pace count and reading contours), which allowed them to excel in the Night-O and traditional orienteering course on Sunday. The team was led by stellar individual performances from Cadets Christian Sitarz ’17, Justin Augustine ’19, Brigette Bordelon ’20, and Gino Saponari ’20 in their respective courses. This was the first exposure to an Orienteering Meet for 8 new members of the Army West Point Orienteering Team. The whole team looks to continue to build on their skills as the fall season progresses. This prepares the team for success as they compete at the United States Orienteering Championships at Pound Ridge, NY from 17-18 September.
