Students from the Advanced Chemistry core course, CH151, under the leadership of LTC Hailey Clancy, experienced an analytical enrichment while visiting the Advanced Chemistry Laboratory, CH487, taught by Dr. Dawn Riegner. Chemistry majors from the class of 2016 introduced the CH151 students to the uses of UV-Vis molecular absorption spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICPAES), and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) molecular mixture analysis. These techniques were used to analyze a variety of sunscreens for their effectiveness in protecting the user. CDT Jeremy Schwartz ’16 worked with CDTs Camm Johnson, Aidan Doyle, Matt Galea and Rachelle David ’19 using the GCMS to identify key organic ingredients of two different SPF sunscreens. CDTs Jordan Bush ’16 and Anna Gulbis ’16 worked with CDTs Galen Kreutzberger, Amy Owens, Carlan Ivey, and Jeffrey Hawkes-Robinson ’19 using UV-Vis to determine which regions of the UV are being absorbed by the different sunscreens. CDTs Rebecca Sauter ’16, Rufus Huffman ’16, and Chuck Nield ’16 worked with CDTs Gerald Lanagan, Brennen Chaussey, Samuel Howard, and Tristan Littlejohn ’19 using ICPAES to observe the elemental content (titanium and zinc) of several sunscreens. Additional support was provided by Dr. Nick Fell (Visiting Professor ARL), Dr. Jim Balz, and Dr. Odil Fayzullaev.
