ANNAPOLIS, MD - After the first full day of the Patriot League Championships, the Army West Point men's swimming and diving team moved up to second in the rankings with 208 points. The Black Knights recorded an Academy and two plebe records on the night. Brandon McCredie won both the preliminaries and finals in the 50 free. The freshman recorded a first-place plebe record time of 20.10 in the morning session, and a first-place time of 20.13 in the evening session. Chris Szekely was eighth after clocking a 20.50, and Nick Treiberg (20.85) and Austin Kong (21.12) finished 14th and 16th. Tom Ottman was Army's top finisher in the 500 free. He placed sixth with a time of 4:25.57. During the preliminaries, the freshman set a new plebe standard with a time of 4:25.96. Evin Rude was ninth with a time of 4:29.38, while Clay Harmon (4:33.13) was 13th. The Black Knights closed-out the evening session with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Josh Sembrano, Joseph Daniels, Kong and Szekely teamed up to touch the wall in 3:15.56.
The Army West Point women's swimming and diving team completed the first full day of competition at the Patriot League Championships Thursday. The Black Knights rank third with 167 points after three Academy were set along with a plebe record. The finals session began with the 500 free in which Sabrina Mortell captured an Academy record. She placed third with a time of 4:49.59 to top her career-best time of 4:52.03 which was the previous standard. In the 200 IM, Sidney Evans finished 10th, and during the preliminaries she recorded an Academy and plebe record time of 2:04.74. She was followed by Jess Burkett who clocked a time of 2:04.74. "I am also proud of all of those who set records for us today," said Wender. "Jay Yang and Sidney Evans were two plebes who did a tremendous job in the 200 IM. Kelly Hamilton is racing particularly hard even though she is fighting some ailments alongside Chris Szekely who has overcome a significant injury." Molly Mucciarone was the Black Knights' top finisher in the 50 free with a time of 23.03. The senior recorded an NCAA B-Cut time of 22.92 in the preliminary round earlier in the day.
Army will be back in action Friday through Saturday for the rest of the Patriot League Championships.
