Cadets enrolled in Genetics (CH388) completed a three-part seminar on cancer from clinical diagnosis to bench research. Cadets gained experience with several resources maintained by the National Cancer Institute to assess cancer incidence, mortality, and clinical trials available for site specific tumors. The cadets, working in groups, prepared presentations on a selected type of cancer which detailed the genetic basis and macro to molecular deregulation observed in patients. These culminating presentations allowed cadets to contextualize genetic techniques discussed in class to generate their own research questions to explore their cancer of interest. This sequence was led by returning faculty member, LTC Melissa Eslinger, who recently completed doctoral studies in cancer biology.
