Renard Wins League Weekly Award

CDT Michael Renard '20After setting the Army West Point program record in the shot put on Saturday, cow Michael Renard has been named Patriot League Male Field Athlete of the Week. Renard's throw of 17.68 meters was the top distance in the Patriot League this season and broke the Army West Point record of 17.38 that was set by Kris Terrill in 1998. 

"Mike has done a nice job since coming in as a freshman," head coach Mike Smith said. "He experienced little success in high school, but has worked very hard and is a great example of the value of perseverance and determination."

In addition to Renard, cow Calli McMullen of the Army women's track team received honorable mention for the second consecutive week. McMullen claimed the team's lone individual victory in the 400m dash and anchored the 4x100 meter relay team to a victory.

The Black Knights now turn their attention to the Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet in Annapolis on April 6.

Women's Lacrosse Secures Home League Win Over Holy CrossThe Army West Point Women's Lacrosse Team picked up its first Patriot League win of the season after defeating Holy Cross, 19-13, on Wednesday afternoon at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights (8-3, 1-2 Patriot League) had contributions from all over the field in the program's first-ever victory over the Crusaders (3-7, 1-2 Patriot League). Jackie Brattan paced an offensive attack that saw eight different Cadets tally a score. The yearling netted a career-high six goals, while adding six draw controls and a pair of ground balls.

Olivia Carter posted her first collegiate hat trick and paired her trio of goals with an assist for four points. Manuela Cortes, Caroline Raymond, Rilee Scott and Megan Raftery each notched two goals in the contest. Raymond teamed up with Samantha Stewart as the top-two facilitators, combining to dish out seven helpers. Stewart showed her presence on the draw as well, coming away with eight draw controls. Defensively, Nia Crump, Charlotte Spencer and Scott combined for seven caused turnovers, while three other Cadets had at least one. In between the pipes, it was Burns who shined for Army as the cow goalie recorded 15 saves. Read more.

CDT Purdy '21 Speaks to H.S. StudentsCDT Lucas Purdy '21, recently went back to his high school in Portsmouth, Ohio to speak with students about what it takes to become a West Point Cadet.

Purdy, a 2017 graduate of Portsmouth High School was back home this week, visiting with family and speaking to high school students about what it takes to become a West Point Cadet.

Purdy told about 30 students at PHS choosing the military for his studies is beneficial because, essentially he is getting about $500,000 in education, room and board without paying tuition. “It’s tuition free,” he told the students. “Free room and board, meals are free and you get a monthly stipend. It’s not much, but you don’t have to pay for much.” Read more.

CDT Michael Renard '20Michael Renard of the Army West Point Men's Track and Field Team has been named Army West Point Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.

The cow set the Academy shot put record on Saturday with a throw of 17.68 meters at the Penn Challenge in Philadelphia, Pa. The mark broke Kris Terrill's record of 17.38 set in 1998.

The Apex, N.C., native was also named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week earlier this week.

The Black Knights will return to action on April 6 for the Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet in Annapolis, Md.

Mr. Ma spoke on the conference's theme of Leading with Character in a Technology Driven World. Pictured here, Mr. Ma accepts a token of appreciation from conference founding benefactor Mr. Bob McDonald, conference host and head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, Colonel Everett Spain, and the cadet is charge of the conference, First Class Cadet TaNia Nash.

Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Helps Baseball Earn Win

che Army West Point baseball team defeated Siena, 6-1, here Wednesday afternoon in a midweek out-of-conference matchup.

The Black Knights scored three runs early and never really looked back. Siena cut into the deficit in the third with one run on three hits but two additional runs for the visitors in the sixth ultimately put the game away. The Cadets added one final run in the ninth to close things out.

Five of Army's six runs in the game came with two outs. Blake Ledoux and Jacob Hurtubise recorded timely hits when they both converted on two-out RBI-singles. Ledoux accounted for all three of the Black Knights' runs in the opening frame, before Hurtubise followed suit in the sixth by bringing home two runs with his hit.

With all Army pitchers on an innings limit, starter Ray Bartoli notched the win after going 2.1 innings allowing three hits and one run. Read more.

Cyber Policy Team of the 9/12 Policy ChallengeThe West Point Cyber Policy Team performed well at the Cyber 9/12 Policy Challenge recently. Both West Point teams advanced to the semifinal round with just thirteen others from the original field of thirty student teams. The 'Knights of the Cyber Table' finished 6th overall out of thirty teams in the student track and were also recognized with the 'Order of Thor' award as the best military team in the entire competition. The 'Blackjacks' also finished 12th out of thirty teams in the student track.

MIT Haystack & Millstone Hill Observatories TripLTC Diana Loucks and Dr. Paula Fekete escorted thirty-one cadets from the Space Physics course to MIT Haystack & Millstone Hill Observatories recently. Attendees were given a glimpse into the complementary aspects of both academic and operational Space. They received briefings regarding the Space Situational Awareness network, asteroid and exoplanet discovery, and ionospheric sensing. Attendees also received a tour of the Haystack and Millstone Hill Observatories.

Army Splits Midweek Twin Bill at Siena

CDT Carrie Reilly '19The Army West Point Softball Team split its midweek doubleheader at Siena after winning game one, 3-1, and falling in game two, 1-0, on Thursday. Cow right-hander Macey Newbary dazzled once again in the circle in the first game, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out five in her fifth complete game of the season. The Missoula, Mont., native has won three of her last four outings. Firstie Renee Poirier was equally impressive in the night cap, surrendering a lone run on five hits and fanning four.

Offensively, firstie Carrie Reilly led the team with three hits on the day, including a double, and stole two bases. Yearling Taylor Livingston added a pair of base knocks on the afternoon, including a double of her own. She also drove in one of Army's three runs on the day. Plebe Madi Gilmore provided the spark in the first game with an RBI single to open the scoring for the visiting squad. Read more.

Cadet Staff Ride to Oahu, HawaiiThe West Point Department of History conducted a staff ride to Oahu, Hawaii where cadets examined the causes and consequences of American expansion into the islands. Cadets visited sites such as the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, the Iolani Palace, Schofield Barracks, Pacific Historic Parks - Diamond Head State Monument, Pearl Harbor, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Waikiki, and the North Shore. Cadets pursued answers to historical questions and sought to better understand how Hawaii went from an independent island kingdom, to a strategic U.S. territory, to the 50th state in the Union. Cadets also attempted surfing and attended a luau to experience unique Hawaiian culture and understand the legacy of U.S. expansion into Hawaii. The group gained a deeper appreciation for the state and people of Hawaii and greater knowledge about an often-overlooked aspect of American history.

Cadets and Faculty Publish Lyme Disease StudyA case study co-authored by Life Science (Thomas Weiss '19, Peter Zhu '19) and premedical cadets (Hannah White '20, Mech Eng), CLS faculty (LTC Jason Barnhill, MAJ Michael Washington, Dr. J. A physical copy of the article, "Latent Lyme Disease Resulting in Chronic Arthritis and Early Career Termination in a United States Army Officer," which features research by 2LT Peter Zhu, was sent to the Zhu family.

CDT McGovern '19 Receives Fullbright Award to FranceCongratulations to CDT Meaghan McGovern, Class of 2019, for being awarded a Fulbright award to France. Named after Senator J. William Fulbright from Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has been devoted to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries since 1947. With oversight from the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright is the world's largest and most diverse international educational exchange program.

Meaghan McGovern, from Congers, NY, studies Physics and Computer Science while on the premedical track at West Point. She has conducted research in the Department of Chemistry & Life Science as part of the Clinical Biochemistry Team under the direction of Dr. Kevin O'Donovan, Dr. Ken Wickiser, and alongside laboratory technicians Mr. Jamie Reilly and Mr. Jesse Trump. Meaghan’s research with CLS has focused on matrix metalloproteinases as blood biomarkers that could predict the progression of osteoarthritis, inform injury recovery regiments, and help reduce combat evacuations for knee injuries.

Cadet McGovern won a Fulbright award for her grant proposal, “Biomedical Impacts and Applications of Heat Nanosources for Individualized Medicine.” She will pursue a two-year masters in Molecular Photonics for Biology and Nanotechnology at École Normale Supérieure in Paris, France.

Following her two-year masters program in Paris, Meaghan will attend medical school. She has already been accepted to the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo, Penn State College of Medicine, and the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine.

Columbia University Genomic Medicine Faculty Visits CadetsThe Director for Clinical Genetics, Ms. Louise Bier, and bioinformatician Dr. Nick Strong from Columbia University visited the Genetics course to guide cadets through patient focused case studies based on exome sequencing data. Cadets analyzed four patients with differing phenotypes and compared their genomic mutations to identify candidate genes, then utilized various databases (i.e., ClinVar) to identify significant variants while gaining practical experience for future use in the clinic. The visit is part of a new collaboration between Columbia University's Institute for Genomic Medicine and the Department of Chemistry and Life Science.

Three Qualify for Individual Gymnastics FinalsThe Army West Point Gymnastics Team ranked fourth after the first day of College Nationals with a 383.200 score. Cole Casanova placed second in the all-around after turning out a 77.400. Three Cadets advanced to Saturday's individual finals. Mathew Davis qualified on floor exercise and still rings, while Casanova and Erik Del Cid will represent Army on vault. Casanova was the Black Knights' top all-around competitor with an 77.400. The Black Knights posted their fourth-best vault score of the season with a team 69.650. Davis was the Cadets' leader on floor exercise (13.950) and still rings (13.300). Casanova notched a 14.200 on vault, a team best. Matthew Martin had a team-best 12.400 on pommel. Leading the squad on parallel bars was Casanova, Davis and Elijah-Ty Phelps. All three competitors had a 12.450. On high bar, Rex Scott and Casanova each earned 12.400 pacing Army on the apparatus. Read more.

English Hosts Dr. Viet Thanh Nguyen

English Hosts Dr. Viet Thanh NguyenThe Department of English and Philosophy welcomed Dr. Viet Thanh Nguyen to West Point last week where he addressed the plebe Introduction to Literature course. Emigrating to the U.S. from Vietnam at the age of four, Dr. Nguyen grew up with an understanding of what is to be a refugee, an experience that informs his Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Sympathizer. Dr. Nguyen also participated in a seminar with cadets enrolled in the literature course "Power and Difference." Recently awarded both Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation fellowships, Dr. Nguyen is currently the Aerol Arnold Chair and Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California.

Casanova, Del Cid Earn All-America Honors

CDT Cole Casanova '19Cole Casanova of the Army West Point Gymnastics Team soared above the competition in Saturday's individual finals of College Nationals when he stuck his landing for a 14.700 on vault.

Casanova was the champion of the event to earn All-America honors for the first time in his career. The 14.700 was a career-high for Casanova and tied Army's program record on the apparatus. The next closest score was a 14.500.

Erik Del Cid also garnered All-America honors as he placed sixth. The yearling posted a 13.900 in the final day of competition.

The Black Knights compete next Saturday in Springfield, Mass., for the ECAC Championships. 

Late Surge Propels Women's Lacrosse Past Lehigh

CDT Caroline Raymond '22The Army West Point Women's Lacrosse Team finished on a 5-1 run to claim the program's first-ever victory over Patriot League foe Lehigh on Saturday night. It was a high-scoring affair as the Black Knights (9-3, 2-2 Patriot League) needed double-digit goals to leave the Lehigh Valley with a 15-13 win against the Mountain Hawks (4-7, 0-4 Patriot League). The Cadets were in an early hole, but the scoring efforts of Jackie Brattan, Caroline Raymond and Samantha Stewart propelled Army to its second consecutive league win. The trio combined for 13 of the team's 15 goals as Raymond and Brattan posted five apiece, while Stewart added three. Stewart also played a pivotal role as a distributor, handing out a team-best three assists for six points. Read more.
