David Rubenstein Lectures CadetsDavid Rubenstein, CEO and Co-Founder of the Carlyle Group, visited the Department of Social Sciences to speak to Money and Banking and the Investment Club. Mr. Rubenstein detailed his experience growing up in Baltimore, his early career in law and government, and his experience growing the Carlyle Group to manage over $170 billion. In addition to his professional success, Mr. Rubenstein is a self-described "Patriotic Philanthropist," and he has undertaken numerous endeavors to preserve the history of the United States through purchases of rare documents or by contributing funding to historical sites.

Corbin Forum's First Ever Girl Scout DayCorbin Forum's held the first ever Girl Scout Day at West Point. Cadets of Corbin taught and exposed these young ladies to various skills in knots, physical fitness through obstacle course relays, plebe and character knowledge, and drill and ceremonies. Cadets and Girl Scouts alike had a great day. The cadets are looking forward to next year already and reaching more future West Point Women.

CDTs Monica Sowinski '19 and David Mitchell '19Cows Monica Sowinski of the Army West Point women's swimming & diving team and David Mitchell of the Army West Point men's tennis team were named the Corps Squad Scholar Athletes of the Month for October on Tuesday. Sowinski, one of Army's top freestyle swimmers, Sowinski regularly scores points for the team. In this season's home opener against UMass at Crandall Pool on Oct. 12, she placed first in the 100 (53.03) and 200 (1:54.27) free, while also taking second in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.26. As a Kinesiology major, she has excelled in the classroom, posting successive 3.81 and 3.73 grade-point averages for the fall and spring semesters of the 2017 academic year.

Mitchell has excelled in the classroom and on the tennis court while embodying every pillar of cadet development. He continues to inspire those around him. During the fall season, Mitchell was recognized by the coaching staff and OR team for providing outstanding leadership and academic mentorship to lower-class students. He helped other members of the team during group study and served as an academic mentor for other team members. Mitchell earned a 3.8 APST as a Political Science major with an emphasis on International Relations last semester. He did this while competing in season for the men's tennis team, and raised his overall APSC to 3.7. Read More

Cadets Visit the Solaire

Cadets Visit the Solaire Fifteen Cadets enrolled in Dr. Richmond’s Land Use Planning and Management, visited the first environmentally friendly residential tower in Manhattan, the Solaire. Cadets got a tour and experienced the technology used to make this a “green” building. In the afternoon, cadets explored the highline to see how this once functioning elevated streetcar was turned into a park and tourist destination, thereby transforming the urban space.

Crew at the Head of the CharlesArmy Crew competed in the world-renowned Head of the Charles and six boats Army entered all represented West Point admirably. Competing among some of the stiffest competition the country has to offer, the Men’s 1V finished 15th out of 37 in the collegiate 8 earning an automatic bid for next year. For some perspective, they were only 7.5 seconds from a top 10 finish and beat Coast Guard in the race. The woman’s 1V finished 15th out of 25 in the collegiate 8, and the men’s 2V finished 19 out of 36 just out-side the top half in the club 8. The woman’s 4 finished 30th of 36. The women’s collegiate 4 was the only woman’s entry for many schools with boats comprised of their program’s top 4 rowers. The men finished 27th out of 52 in the club 4 event, one place from an automatic reentry.

Cadets Collect Real-World Data with Hi-Tech GearCompanies providing surveying equipment to the Geospatial Information Science Program came to West Point to support Survey Demonstration Day for the Surveying Course. Enrolled cadets participated in a trip section at Lusk Reservoir with leaders from Keystone Precision Instruments and Trimble, Inc. to learn advances in surveying technology. Cadets collected real-world data with state-of-the-art equipment and technologies for upcoming classes. They explored technologies to include the Hydrone Sonar System, an integrated robotic GPS/total station, Trimble GeoX7 mapping grade GPS receivers, and the Trimble SX10 terrestrial scanner. After collecting the field data, the demonstration concluded in the West Point GeoScience Lab where advanced software suites for visualization and map product production were used to create high resolution advanced 3D geospatial products.

CPT Vargas from ESMIC Visits USMACPT Edwin Vargas, liaison from the Colombian Military Academy (ESMIC), visited West Point. During his visit, he expressed ESMIC’s gratitude for West Point’s cooperation in training and education exchange programs that benefit both academies. He also met with Cadets Diego Mantilla and Marco Garcia, West Point cadets from Colombia who are part of the 4-year international cadet program.


Bruns Captures Goalie of the Week Honors

CDT Cole Bruns '18Firstie goaltender Cole Bruns captured Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week honors for the second time this season after Army West Point's weekend sweep at No. 19 Air Force. Bruns posted 57 saves on the weekend while allowing just two goals on the road. In Saturday night's 2-0 victory, he posted the second shutout of his career and even assisted on Army's final goal of the game. Bruns boasted a 1.0 goals against average and had a .966 save percentage in the series. It was the first time since 2003 that Army had swept Air Force on the road, and the first time since 2007 that the Black Knights shut out the Falcons. The Prairie Grove, Ill., native backed Army's 100% penalty kill efficiency on the weekend as #19 Air Force was 0-for-6 on the power play. MULF Agrees to Exchange Cadets with USMA

MULF Agrees to Exchange Cadets with USMADr. Mansour from the Dean’s International Intellectual Development Office and Department of Foreign Languages represented West Point at a ceremony in Wroclaw, Poland, during which the commandant of Kosciuszko Military University of Land Forces (MULF), BG Darius Skorupka, signed agreements to exchange Cadets and strengthen cooperation in research with USMA faculty. Directly following the signing, the agreements were announced at MULFs Convocation to the applause of about a thousand Cadets, dozens of representatives of the Polish government, NATO and other military academies, including Saint-Cyr in France, Baltic Defense University in Estonia, and Austria’s Theresian Military Academy. While on the visit, Dr. Mansour observed classes, visited with academic department heads and spoke with MULF faculty about military and academic training options for US and Polish exchange cadets. MULF will send two cadets to USMA next semester, and officer faculty members will visit USMA this month to plan cadet exchanges and leader development and faculty research opportunities. Over the last two summers, USMA Cadets have trained at MULF’s “Military Erasmus” sessions during trips arranged by faculty of the Defense and Strategic Studies program.

Russian Language Cadets Visit Brighton BeachCadets enrolled in upper-level Russian language courses had the opportunity to visit the Russian-speaking community of Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, NY. The Cadets began their visit at the Shorefront Young Men and Woman’s Hebrew Association, which provides numerous services to the Brooklyn immigrant community from countries of the former Soviet Union. The center was honored to have several New York elected officials in attendance on this occasion: NYS Assemblywoman Helene E. Weinstein 41st Assembly District; NYS Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz 45th Assembly District; NYS Senator Diane Savino 23rd Senate District; US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries Eight District of NY. After spending time making friends and even singing songs with community members, the cadets had a few hours to try out Russian cuisine for lunch at one of the many cafes or restaurants on Brighton beach Avenue or the boardwalk.

Bradshaw Earns Army Athlete of the Week Accolades

Ahmad Bradshaw ran for an Army quarterback record 265 yards on 23 carries in the Black Knights' 21-0 victory at Air Force on Saturday. Bradshaw average 11.5 yards per carry in the game and 15 of his 23 rushes were for first downs. Bradshaw ran for a career high 265 yards, including 164 in the first half. Bradshaw now has 2,424 yards in his career and passed Army West Point Hall of Famer Charlie Jarvis for eighth all-time on the career rushing list. Bradshaw was the first quarterback to rush for 200 or more yards since Trent Steelman's record breaking performance in 2012 against Eastern Michigan. He was the first player to rush for 200 or more yards since Terry Baggett rushed for 304 against Eastern Michigan in 2013. Bradshaw ran for his eighth touchdown of the season and 21st of his career and he is now tied for 11th in Army history with 21 rushing touchdowns. Debate Tournament at the University of NevadaArmy Debate competed at a national-level tournament at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Three teams did especially well: USMA KM (Seamus Matlack & TJ Kilcullen), USMA CP (June Copeland & Connor Phillips), and USMA MS (Isabella Minter & Henry Smith). All cadets had extremely strong showings, with USMA MS making it to the quarter-final round in the most difficult division (open).

Men's Boxing Dominates Chuck Davey Boxing ClassicThe West Point Men’s Boxing Team traveled to the Detroit Athletic Club to box against Air Force and Navy in the Chuck Davey Boxing Classic. The team completely dominated the event as they defeated three Air Force and three Navy boxers to finish the night with a combined record of 6-0. Isiah Ortiz '20, William Parada '19, Adrian Albin '20, Anders Freiberg '18, Jordan Elliot '18, and Egbezien Obiomon '18.

Triathlon Competes in Puerto Lopez CAMTRIThe Army West Point Triathlon Team sent two cadets to Puerto Lopez, Ecuador to compete in the Puerto Lopez CAMTRI Triathlon American Championships. CDTs Jacob Slife ’18 and Teresa Groton ’18 are licensed professional triathletes and the CAMTRI race is part of the International Triathlon Union’s elite triathlon series for professionals in the America’s. Competitors at CAMTRI gain points in the ITU rankings based upon their finish which allow them to race in specific draft-legal series events and makes them competitive for earning spots on their country’s Olympic teams. There were 67 professional men and 36 professional women in the field. The athletes represented nations from across North and South America with only 3 men and 2 women (including the cadets) representing the United States. The cadets put up outstanding performances against elite full-time professionals. CDT Slife placed 9th in the men's professional Under-23 Race. CDT Groton placed 6th in the women's professional Under-23 race.

Cadets Visit WP Middle SchoolA group of cadets from the Spanish Forum and Dance Club, under the direction of Dr. Amaya Amell, visited the West Point Middle School to give interactive presentations on Spanish-speaking countries. There were students from the elementary and middle schools in attendance and the cadets were a big hit among them. The children asked all types of questions to the forum members and were excited to meet and spend time with them. In addition, the students had a chance to learn some Latin dance moves from the members of the Dance Club under the direction of CPT Gray. They learned moves of typical Latin dances such as the bachata and the merengue.

Cadets in Kiev Visit Odessa and ChisinauCadets studying in Kiev had an opportunity to travel to Odessa and Chisinau recently. Both cities have large Russian speaking populations. Odessa is a port city which is a popular summer destination for Russian speaking tourists with a rich history from both imperial and communist periods. The cadets also learned about local prominent figures while on a walking tour. Standing in Sobor Square, the cadets learned about Russian Prince and Field Marshall Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov. Vorontsov was a successful military leader during the Napoleanic and Crimean Wars. He also served as governor of “New Russia” an old name for the region which now has ominous implications.

Arroyo, Stoll Named to Academic All-League Team

Marcos Arroyo '18 and Justin Stoll '20Marcos Arroyo and Justin Stoll of the Army West Point men's soccer team were named to the Academic All-Patriot League squad on Wednesday. On top of being a co-captain, All-Patriot League performer and Deputy Brigade Commander, Arroyo has excelled greatly in the classroom, carrying a 3.675 grade-point average as a Physics major. The Oviedo, Fla., native ranks 48th out of 1,043 in his class and has been a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member. Stoll was recognized as one of the top goalkeepers in the Patriot League as just a sophomore after he took home All-Patriot League Second Team honors earlier this week. Between the pipes, he led the league in goals-against average (.756) and shutouts (8). Off the pitch, the Pompton Lakes, N.J., native accumulated a 3.386 GPA as an Economics major. Read More

12th Annual Frances Hesselbein Student Leader ConfThe Psychology Program hosted the 12th Annual Frances Hesselbein Student Leader Conference. The Military Child Education Coalition sponsored the conference. The conference brings together high school students who are student leaders in their Student 2 Student program, a peer-based program designed to support military children as they transition to and from schools. The conference provides the students numerous opportunities designed to develop their leadership knowledge and skills. One opportunity involved having a discussion with Psychology cadets enrolled in Life-span and Human Development about issues facing military children and their families.
