Each team of students, coached by a Cadet or Midshipman, worked through three different modules. The West Point Physics and Nuclear Engineering Department hosted a workshop that focused on solving puzzles using a marble-powered computer. The West Point Civil & Mechanical Engineering Department hosted a competition to design and build a bridge. And the West Point Mathematical Sciences Department provided a robotics challenge where students got to build a robot and then programmed it to autonomously navigate through a maze. Cadets and midshipmen got to exercise their small group leadership skills, and the middle school students got to learn about STEM topics that they would not cover in school. The event was hosted by The West Point Center for Leadership & Diversity in STEM (CLD-STEM) with participation from the US Naval Academy STEM Center for Education and Outreach. CLD-STEM relies completely on Margin Of Excellence private funding from generous donors to provide workshops, which have far-reaching effects for underserved future STEM scholars and provides unique leadership opportunities for West Point cadets. The Center is dedicated to attracting and retaining STEM talent for West Point, the Army, and the nation.
