Projects Day Keeps Growing

Projects Day 2015The United States Military Academy at West Point held its annual Projects Day on April 30, 2015. Projects Day began 16 years ago when one academic department invited external guests to witness the applied research its cadets had done in support of the Army and the Department of Defense. This year, Projects Day featured nearly 300 capstone projects from 14 academic departments. From the ballroom of the West Point Club to the 4th floor of the Kimsey Athletic Center, and in the rooms and through the halls of Bartlett, Thayer and Washington Halls, Projects Day dominated the day at West Point. Donors, local area high school students, special guests and undergraduate cadets were treated to various poster displays, interactive demonstrations and presentations, and even performances by cadets (those in EP394: Shakespeare put on a full theatrical production of “Much Ado About Nothing”). “The only thing that disappoints me about Projects Day is that you just can’t see everything,” said BG Timothy Trainor ’83, Dean of the Academic Board. As Projects Day has grown in size of venue and number of projects, it has also grown in importance, especially among the cadets. “Projects Day demands something from us,” said CDT Krystal Onyema ’15, who worked with CDT Haileigh Phillips ’15 to analyze the feedback given by ELITE, a virtual military-counseling program. “It’s about actually having to produce effective results for our sponsoring agency, which is something we are going to have to do soon as platoon leaders or staff members,” Onyema said.
