Academic Clubs
Debate Forum:
- On 10 January, the Army Debate Team travelled to Brooklyn, NY to spend the weekend at Brooklyn Technical High School
- They spent their time there as volunteer judges and facilitators to support the NYC Urban Debate League that helps city intermedi-ate and high school kids enhance their education, research, and public speaking skills through debate
- This year’s guest speaker was Mayor Bill de Blasio
Marathon:
- On 12 Dec., the West Point Marathon Team completed the 247 mile journey down to Baltimore, MD
- This run provided excellent outreach with the surrounding communities as the team passed through
- Local law enforcement guided the team down and a local business, Reagent Chemical, hosted the team for a hot dinner
- The Marathon team made it the Baltimore M&T stadium safely and ahead of schedule
- The team then ran the ball on the field to start the Army vs. Navy game, and they all received coins from General Odierno
Support Clubs
Scoutmasters’ Council:
- On 10 January, 19 Cadets from the Scoutmasters’ Council travelled to Hunter Mountain Ski Area in Palenville, NY
- The Scoutmasters’ Council conducted a team-building event in preparation for the Scoutmasters’ Council Cam-poree that will take place 1-3 May, 2015 in Lake Frederick
Hobby Clubs
Alpine Skiing:
- On 10-11 January, the Army Ski Team conducted a mini-camp at Windham Mt., NY
- The team received training from Coach Bob Harkins, Gould Academy, Maine and father of racer Sawyer Har-kins, Class of 2018
- The team trained in both disciplines (Giant Slalom and Slalom) and showed vast improvement within every run
- On Saturday afternoon, the cadets had an opportunity to meet with some Wounded Warriors, who with their families, were being entertained and trained in Adaptive Sports thru the Adaptive Snow Sports Program at Windham Mt
- The Adaptive Snow Sports Program Director, Ms. Pam Greene, gave the cadets a tour of their facility and ex-plained how their staff trains with the Wounded Warri-ors
- The Army Ski Team’s first race is 17-18 January at Lab-rador Mt., and is now primed and ready to shred!
Inline Hockey:
- On 9-11 January, the West Point Hockey Club travelled to New London, CT, to compete against club hockey teams from the Coast Guard Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy and the Naval Academy in the annual Service Leaders of Tomorrow (SLOT) Ice Hockey Tournament
- The West Point Hockey Club won the tournament’s inaugural event last year, outlasting the Merchant Marine Academy with a late come-from-behind victory
- This year, West Point skated to comfortable victories against Navy and the Merchant Marine Acad-emy, and also beat them in a skills competition held on Friday night
- The West Point Hockey Club opened tournament play by beating Navy in a decisive fashion, winning 5-2
In two games this season against Navy’s Division II Club, Army has won twice, outscoring their rival 13-4 on aggregate
- Although the score in the most recent matchup remained close, the Army team achieved a significant advantage in both possession and shots on goal
- Navy spent much of the afternoon defending and was only able to gen-erate 19 shots against West Point; CDT Mike St. Denis scored twice in the third period to put the game well out of reach
- On Sunday, the West Point Hockey Club won the tournament, beating the team from King’s Point 8-1 in the Championship game
- An addition to this year’s tournament, teams partici-pated in a skills competition on Friday evening with the West Point Club winning that event as well
- Second Class CDTs Thane Heller and Mike St.Denis collected individual honors for hardest shot and shooting accuracy, respectively
- Other events included a race to determine the fast-est skater and a breakaway competition
- As part of the skills competition, teams played abbreviated 20-minute games against each other service academy teams, with Army winning all three games by an aggregate score of 7-0
- The event, which included a keynote address by former Army Hockey Coach Rob Riley, served a fitting showcase for the Acad-emies, as well as the sport of hockey
