LTC Brian J. Novoselich from the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and Dr. David B. Knight of Virginia Tech recently co-authored published research entitled, “Shared Leadership in Capstone Design Teams: Social Network Analysis” in the Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice. This study examined the extent to which leadership is shared within undergraduate, senior-level mechanical engineering capstone design teams and classified teams based on their level of leadership sharing. Results indicated that leadership is more shared than vertical within capstone design teams, and a quadrant classification of shared leadership may be appropriate for describing leadership processes therein. The results developed a student design team leadership taxonomy and suggests that shared leadership models may be more consistent with student design experiences than historical, vertical leadership models.
