LTC James Bluman '99 from the Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering published an article, Control of a Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle: Sliding-Mode Approach, in the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics (JGDC)on a method to control robotic micro-air vehicles in hover, a nonlinear and time-varying dynamics problem. The paper describes an unconventional method of maintaining control even in the face of large wind gusts and wing damage - a condition common for insects.
