Public Speaking & Speeches for Special Occasions

Dr. Jason Hoppe and Cadet Writing Fellows Alanna Appel '20 and Helen Schroeder '20 met with several cadets to discuss public speaking and speeches for special occasions. After first defining 'public speaking,' and cadet relationships to it, the group outlined scripted process for both preparing and executing public speaking in a range of contexts. They also exchanged key tips, rooted in experience and scholarship, on conquering stage fright, speaking effectively, and making moments memorable through words that last. Finally, the group concluded with exercises in which cadets worked with Cadet Writing Fellows to prepare speeches, on the spot, in response to a variety of prompts.
