Cadets Alex Aukerman, Sai Kumar, Chris Raymond, and Kyle Werner presented their research on Cost Estimation for US Army Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC) Engineered Resilient Systems (ERS) at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Systems Conference (IEEESYSCON) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The cadets’ research focused on providing decision makers with a lifecycle cost estimate for prospective systems early in the acquisition process and thereby allowing them to make more informed decisions. The cadets were the only undergraduate team represented at the conference which focused on how systems engineering could enhance the understanding and solution realization in a world growing ever more complex. Additionally, Majors Stephen Gillespie and Thomas Ryan presented their case study completed with contributing author LTC James Schreiner on teaching systems thinking. The focus of the faculty research is on how to teach systems thinking, how much time should be allocated to systems thinking in the curriculum and what specific tools and techniques should be included.
