The Russian Section hosted the former U.S. Army Attaché to Russia, COL R. Taft Blackburn. COL Blackburn served in Moscow from July 2012 to September 2014 and again in 2016. His time at the Defense Attaché Office - Moscow includes the period immediately after the illegal annexation of Crimea and hostilities in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Asked to return to Moscow as the Army Attaché in August 2016, he completed a one-year assignment there in November 2017 and currently serves as the Division Chief for the Army International Affairs Division on the Army Staff. His lecture entitled "Russia through the Eyes of an Attaché" highlighted the unique responsibilities of Foreign Area Officers and provided a current assessment of Russian politics, society, and culture.
