Brigadier General Karsten Stoye of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), who commands the E3 Sentry Component at Geilenkirchen, Germany, visited the Modern Europe and Modern Germany classes taught by Dr. Michael Geheran and MAJ Christian Garner, respectively. General Stoye spoke with cadets about a wide array of topics related to the German military’s role in the world wars, the establishment of NATO during the Cold War, and the current threats confronting the alliance. Cadets were particular eager to learn about the challenges new officers should anticipate when serving in a multinational force, and asked numerous questions about General Stoye’s experiences serving with other NATO officers from different countries in operations around the world. As one cadet remarked afterwards, “Having the opportunity to speak with a non-U.S. NATO general really helped me understand the responsibility we have, as U.S. lieutenants, to help maintain and strengthen the alliance. Mutual cooperation is key to tacking the national security threats we face today.”
