The Army West Point women's lacrosse team battled to a 12-9 season-opening victory on the road Saturday afternoon at Monmouth's Kessler Stadium. After allowing the first goal of the contest, Army netted four-straight goals to go up 4-1 with 15:50 remaining in the first half. That run was fueled by a pair of tallies by Amy Johnston, separated by just 44 seconds. Rachel Hornick assisted the firstie co-captain on both tallies. After trading free position goals, the home side scored two goals in the final 2:40 of the opening period to cut Army's lead to 5-4 at the break. Army won the opening draw of the second half and picked up the offensive ground ball, a turnover led to the game-tying goal for the Hawks. Army countered with a go-ahead, man-up goal at the 27:10 remaining in the game. That edge would stand for the rest of the game as the Black Knights did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the contest. Monmouth worked the score to 7-6 before a 4-1 scoring streak from the Cadets put the game out of reach. Read More
