Cadet Gerald Crawford 1968 - Standing, LeftThe Cadet Amateur Radio Club made HF radio contact with COL (R) Gerald E. Crawford located in South Carolina last Thursday. COL Crawford was the Cadet-in-Charge of the Cadet Amateur Radio Club his firstie year. COL Crawford commissioned into the Signal Corps upon graduation. He served in Vietnam and later served as the battalion commander of the 24th Signal Battalion at Fort Stewart, GA from 1981 to 1984 and retired after serving as the Chief of Staff of 7th Signal Command in 1993. In 1968, then Cadet Crawford helped build the club's Heathkit Amateur Radios. These radios still operate today thanks to restoration work by Mr. Paul Gordon. COL Crawford mentioned in the radio contact that it has been 50 years since he has spoken with anyone over the air affiliated with the Cadet Amateur Radio Club. This radio contact is unique as it shows that West Point alumni can speak and connect with current cadets and faculty using the hobby they explored as a cadet. The club would like to thank COL Crawford for his kind and generous monetary donation to the club this past year.
