History Hosts Rwandan Genocide Survivor Rwandan Genocide survivor Eugenie Mukeshimana told her harrowing story to cadets in Dr. David Frey's "Genocide and Mass Killing" course, and to an audience of faculty and cadets from various departments. Ms. Mukeshimana, who was hidden by multiple families over the three months of the genocide, told a virtually unbelievable tale and described the loss of most of her family, including her husband. Ms. Mukeshimana's story was nearly incomprehensible, as she not only survived, but survived while pregnant. She ultimately gave birth to her daughter while in hiding only days before being liberated. Not just a model of strength and courage, Ms. Mukeshimana also showed cadets how to recover. Since immigrating to the US in 2001, Ms. Mukeshimana became a social worker and founded the Genocide Survivors Support Network. She continues to do critical social work helping survivors recover and thrive.
