US District Court Judge Jesse Furman visited with cadets in the Advanced Constitutional Law class. Judge Furman has been a federal judge at the trial level for five years. Prior to becoming a judge, he was an Assistant US Attorney in Manhattan, working on national security matters including the September 11 attacks and the 1998 East Africa Embassy bombings. He also served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice David Souter and as Counselor to US Attorney General Michael Mukasey. Judge Furman spoke with the cadets about the Sixth Amendment's Right to Jury Trial Clause. He discussed the scope and implications of jury trial rights regarding the resolution of criminal charges. He also described the process known as voir dire, where prospective jurors are questioned to determine whether they can be fair and impartial during deliberations and in reaching a verdict.
