Nobel Laureate Visits CLS

Nobel Laureate Visits CLSMAJ Ryan Rodriguez, a 2016 graduate of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concentrating in the biochemistry of the human malaria parasite, hosted Dr. Peter Agre, MD, to visit cadets, staff, and faculty in Chemistry, Life and Science (CLS) to share the science and the story behind his discovery of Aquaporin membrane proteins. A discovery which earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003. Dr. Agre is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and he is currently the director of the Malaria Research Institute at Johns Hopkins. Having retired from laboratory research, Dr. Agre leverages his position to promote science literacy, education, and research throughout the world using Science as a diplomatic tool. During his visit to the Academy, Dr. Agre presented a technical talk to the staff and faculty covering the ever-present role that Aquaporin's play throughout the biological world and in the evening he discussed Science-based international diplomacy to the pre-medical club, discussing the many international collaborations and relationships he has fostered.
