Judge Castel Visits with Cadets

US District Court Judge Kevin Castel visited with cadets in the Advanced Constitutional Law seminar taught by Associate Professor and Constitutional Law Chair, Tony DiSarro. Judge Castel was appointed to the federal bench by President George W. Bush in 2003. Prior to that, he was a practicing lawyer in Manhattan, specializing in business litigation. He also teaches as an adjunct professor in the field of Professional Responsibility at NYU School of Law. Judge Castel spoke with the cadets about the Sixth Amendment and the Assistance of Counsel Clause. He traced the origins of counsel being permitted to advocate on behalf of those accused of crimes to Greek and Roman times. He noted that the right attained constitutional status in the United States prior to achieving the same status in England.
