Prof Schmitt Awarded the Order of the Cross

The President of Estonia, Her Excellency Kersti Kaljulaid, awarded Professor Michael Schmitt, the Francis Lieber Distinguished Scholar at West Point, the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana. The award, which is given to foreigners who have made a significant contribution to the nation, recognizes his work as Director of the Tallinn Manual Project and his broader contributions to cyber security. The effort resulted in publication of the 2013 Tallinn Manual on the International Law Applicable to Cyber Warfare and the 2017 Tallinn Manual 2.0 on the International Law Applicable to Cyber Operations. Schmitt was in Estonia to direct the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence’s course for legal advisers on cyber law and to speak at the Senior Executive Seminar on Cyber Conflict. He also serves as a Senior Fellow for the Center.
