Cows Monica Sowinski of the Army West Point women's swimming & diving team and David Mitchell of the Army West Point men's tennis team were named the Corps Squad Scholar Athletes of the Month for October on Tuesday. Sowinski, one of Army's top freestyle swimmers, Sowinski regularly scores points for the team. In this season's home opener against UMass at Crandall Pool on Oct. 12, she placed first in the 100 (53.03) and 200 (1:54.27) free, while also taking second in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.26. As a Kinesiology major, she has excelled in the classroom, posting successive 3.81 and 3.73 grade-point averages for the fall and spring semesters of the 2017 academic year.
Mitchell has excelled in the classroom and on the tennis court while embodying every pillar of cadet development. He continues to inspire those around him. During the fall season, Mitchell was recognized by the coaching staff and OR team for providing outstanding leadership and academic mentorship to lower-class students. He helped other members of the team during group study and served as an academic mentor for other team members. Mitchell earned a 3.8 APST as a Political Science major with an emphasis on International Relations last semester.
