Faculty and cadets from the Department of Systems Engineering visited the Logistics Management Institute (LMI) in Tysons, VA. Attendees included LTC Evangelista, CPT Beigh, and cadets John Grinsel, Kameron Grubaugh, David Jeong, Nick McAfee, Emily McGowan, Dan Voecks, and Zach Zimmerman. The meeting included members of both LMI and the DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office, the project client. Mr. Herzberg of LMI provided an overview of the maintenance and availability data warehouse (MADW). The centerpiece of the MADW is a relational database that attempts to classify, summarize, and assign cost for every maintenance activity in the DoD. The two cadet capstone projects involved with this meeting are focused on the following two topics: improvement of the accuracy and completeness of the maintenance activity identification process using data analytics and data mining; and development a quantitative approach to analyze effects and improve the efficiency of corrective and preventative maintenance actions.
