The Army West Point Orienteering Team traveled to Letchworth State Park near Rochester, NY to compete in the 2017 Falls Classic National Meet hosted by the Rochester Orienteering club. The last time they competed in this event was fall of 2014 and many of the firsties were plebes. The meet consisted of two classic-style orienteering races and levels ranging from Orange (beginner) to Blue (most advanced). Day one was challenging with courses ranging from 6-km to 10-km with over 300-m in climb. In M-Orange, CDT Joseph Heindrichs ’21 took 1st in his age group and 3rd overall. In F-Green, CDT Arelena Shala ’20 came in 3rd place. In M-Red, CDT Gino Saponari ’20 took 2nd place, 3 minutes behind first. In M-Blue, CIC CDT Michael Bruce came in 4th place. Day two of the competition the team took head on, topping their times from the previous race. For F-Orange, CDT Julianne Meany ’21 took 1st place. CDT Joseph Heindrichs ’21 once again snagged 1st in M-Orange and CDT Arelena Shala ‘20 moved up to 1st place in F-Green. A successful weekend with over 10 members of the team placing in the top 5 each day.
