During Cadet Autumn Shea’s summer internship at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) she happened to meet Senator Lindsey Graham, who had nominated her to the United States Military Academy. Both cadet Shea and Senator Graham are South Carolinians but met for the first time at USIP. They attended a ceremony honoring soldiers of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division for their role in achieving a local peace accord in Iraq that offers a model for potential peacemaking and stabilization in the aftermath of ISIS. USIP and our Iraqi partners worked with the 10th Mountain Division on the peace process, and the accord underpins the region's stability still today. Cadet Shea was at USIP as part of the Civ-Mil Cadet Internship program, which places West Point cadets within a USIP center to learn about peacebuilding and gain practical experience that can inform their future careers.
