The orienteering team traveled to Amherst, MA to compete in the Traverse. The 13-kilometer course, hosted by the New England Orienteering Club, gave the team the opportunity to challenge their orienteering skills and endurance. The 600m of elevation change, cold weather, and thick brush tested the mettle of the Army West Point Orienteering team. Despite the early morning onset of snow, the team took the course head-on and had several outstanding performances. Placing above many elite runners, CDT Evans ’18 took 5th place with a total time of 2 hours and 17 minutes. Following close behind was Team Captain Sitarz ’17 with a time of 2 hours and 19 minutes. Among the newest members of the team, CDT Saponari ’20 placed 15th with a time of 2 hours and 43 minutes. This was CDT Saponari’s longest and most technical traditional orienteering course since beginning orienteering in August. This meet allowed each team member to assess their abilities and they will finish the semester with specific training goals in mind to prepare for their final meet of the season, the long anticipated 2nd Annual Army-Navy Orienteering meet!
