The Department of Social Sciences (SOSH) faculty hosted three CSA Strategic Studies Group (SSG) Fellows conducting research for a project to create a conceptual framework for the Army in 2025-2050. The fellows met with eight faculty members to discuss the U.S. domestic political context and its influence on the requirements that will be expected of our Army and the means available. The session, which lasted approximately two and half hours, focused on an assessment of several assumptions underpinning an earlier SSG report examining global trends in the international system and technology. Among other topics, the group discussed possible directions for the use of cyber capabilities, the U.S. position in light of potential competitors like Russia and China, trends in political polarization, and the plausible range of operations that the Army may be tasked with in the near future. The visiting fellows stated that the session was valuable for their ongoing research and plan to continue the discussion with our faculty as they work through the broader project. In addition, the opportunity to assist fellow officers outside of SOSH was an excellent experience for the faculty group, which included first- and second-year rotators, as well as a program director, and has sparked interest among the junior faculty in continuing outreach to the operational and institutional Army.
