STEM Motivates Math Interests in Cadets through MIMSSThe Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM via the Minorities in Mathematics Speakers Series (MIMSS) recently had visits from guest speakers. They hosted Dr. Bobby Wilson, C.L.D Moore Instructor at MIT. Dr. Wilson presented on “Interplay Between Fractals, Projections and Differentiability” to USMA cadets and faculty. Attendees were introduced to the notion of geometric measure theory involving fractal sets, their projections and the relationship between the projections of differential curves and unrectifiable sets. Dr. Ganesan is an associate professor of systems engineering and operations research at George Mason University in Farfax, VA. He presented on “Adaptive Cyber Defense: Dynamic Scheduling of Cybersecurity Analysts to maintain Level of Operational Effectiveness Using Reinforcement Learning” to USMA cadets and faculty. Attendees were introduced to a reinforcement learning-based stochastic dynamic programming optimization model that incorporates the estimates of future demand on alert analysis, and responds by scheduling regular and on-call cyber-security analysts to maintain a desired level of operational effectiveness.
