The Vietnamese-American Cadets Association traveled to the home of Mr. Peter Vu ’85. This trip was in response to Mr. Vu’s invitation to the club for a barbeque at his home. Mr. Vu prepared traditional Asian dishes, such as kalbi beef short ribs and Thai chicken green curry, as well as typical barbeque fare. The relaxed setting allowed the cadets to socialize with each other and enabled the 4th Class cadets, many who were meeting each other for the first or second time, to get to know each other better. This contributed to building up the foundation of the club and the Vietnamese-American community at West Point. Over the course of the day, Mr. Vu shared his many interests that he has acquired in civilian life, including cooking, photography, and the game of chess. He also provided mentorship to the cadets by sharing his experiences as the first Vietnamese-American graduate of West Point and his time as an officer. His story served to inspire all of the Vietnamese-American cadets that were fortunate enough to share the day with him. Upon returning to West Point, the cadets were glad to have been able to interact with and learn from Mr. Vu. In follow-up communications with Mr. Vu, he also expressed his appreciation for cadets wanting to visit him and allowing him to continue to serve cadets and West Point. At least once a semester, Mr. Vu and VACA has maintained their relationship by either Mr. Vu visiting West Point or the club visiting his home. This trip was the latest in a series of interactions between Mr. Vu and Vietnamese-American cadets that began two years ago and the latest effort by VACA to build relationships with the Vietnamese-American graduates of West Point.
