Amateur Radio Club Helps Boy Scouts Earn BadgesFifty Boy Scouts earned their Radio Merit Badge due to the efforts of four Cadets from the Cadet Amateur Radio Club, CPT Sherburne, and two Radio Merit Badge Counselors. The Scouts had the opportunity to speak with amateur radio operators from Italy and Germany as well as operators in the states of Florida, Georgia, and Illinois. The Cadets learned how to make a military dipole antenna that would function on the frequencies we would operate and then conducted a field expedient install of the antenna from a tree. The event began at 11:30 and ended at 5pm. All scouts were from Troops located outside of West Point. The parents enjoyed seeing their sons operate radios and get to hear operators from thousands of miles away talking on the radio.
